Boyukagha Huseynov, one of the prominent representatives of 20th-century
Azerbaijani Orientalism, primarily focused on theoretical issues of modern Iranian
poetry in his scholarly works. Although his monograph on tradition and innovation in
Persian poetry was written nearly half a century ago, it retains its scholarly value in
many respects and is one of the most authoritative studies in the field. One aspect of
Boyukagha Huseynov's work was related to the problems of Iranian literature, while
another sought to better familiarize the Azerbaijani people with selected examples of
this literature through translation. Another focus of the scholar's work was his own
verses written in the Aruz and syllabic meters, classical in form and contemporary in
content. Indeed, this quality was inherent in the leading figures of 20th-century
Azerbaijani Oriental studies. In addition to authoring the most significant studies of
modern Iranian literature, he also worked extensively in other fields. Teaching at the
Faculty of Oriental Studies at Azerbaijan State University, mentoring nearly 20 young
scholars under his academic supervision, and conducting constructive research when
being in management of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan Academy
of Sciences for 20 years, he always provided invaluable and commendable assistance
in educating new generations of Azerbaijani Orientalists and advancing this field of
scholarship to a new stage of development in the republic.
