The article talks about the history of the origin and development of the lament in Arabic literature. However, how the funeral music appeared before the appearance of the lament cannot fail to arouse interest. Therefore, this issue is also addressed in the article, and the story of Prophet Adam, who is considered the author of the first funeral songs, is mentioned. Then, the most brilliant representatives and examples in Arabic literature are reflected, providing extensive information about the genre. In connection with the study of the main object and subject of the article, the names of famous people such as Khansa, Abu al-Atahiya, Ibn Surayj are mentioned, at the same time Ignác Goldziher's article on lamentation and Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani's work “Kitab al-Aghani” which is considered a valuable written source at all times is referred to. When appropriate, comparisons are made with the lament genre, which has beautiful examples in Azerbaijani literature. Thus, it is no coincidence that the month of Muharram is celebrated in our traditions in connection with the incident of Karbala, and therefore the lamentations become widespread. For this reason, we think that the study of laments in both Azerbaijani and Arabic literature can help to achieve interesting results in this field.
