The art of carpet weaving is one of the important types of decorative and applied arts of Azerbaijan, the traditions and secrets of this art have been preserved with special care and transmitted from generation to generation. There are many facts and notes about the history and development of Azerbaijani carpet art. Azerbaijan, with its fertile soils and favorable climate perfectly suited for sheep farming, was rightly known for the excellent quality of its wool, which guaranteed the strength of the carpets produced in this region.
Guba is one of the regions where carpet weaving is developed in Azerbaijan. So, as noted by the carpet artist Latif Karimov and most other local and foreign researchers, Guba has historically been the center of carpet making. "Pirabadil" carpets, which belong to the Guba carpet group, also attract special attention with their design and artistic arrangement, and have been a frequently requested design in different periods. "Pirabadil" carpets are considered one of the brightest compositions in the Guba group and the entire Caucasian carpet production. Due to its enigmatic nature, the design has been variously classified and interpreted in the carpet literature.
The article discusses the development of "Pirabadil" carpets in different time periods, as well as the different opinions and theories about Pirabadil design. Christine Klose noted that the design of the "Pirabadil" evolved in four different chronological stages. Information about each stage is reflected in the article. At the same time, information is given about the mention of these carpets under different names in the books of foreign authors. In some foreign literatures, "Pirabadil" carpets are listed under the name Gabistan. The etymology of the term Qabistan has been researched and issues of its connection with Guba and Pirebadil carpets have been noted.
