The rights of local lords and gentlemen were significantly increased with the land reform carried out by Tsarist Russia in the South Caucasus in the 1850s. This reform greatly increased their oppression over the local population and led to the expansion of the smuggling movement. Although well-known figures, such as Kachak Nabi, Kachak Suleyman, and Kachak Kerem appeared in the territory of Azerbaijan, we can say without hesitation that none of them can be compared to Deli Ali in terms of fame, stealth, inviolability and scale. Deli Ali has no equal in the fugitive movement.
Deli Ali occupies a special place among Ashug Alasgar’s literary heroes. There is an epic about this called “The story of Ashuq Alasgar with Deli Ali”. The main line of the epos is that Deli Ali who wants to marry his niece Zeynalabdin, invites to the wedding Ashug Alasgar whose fame has already spread everywhere. Ashug Alasgar had composed poems about Deli Ali, including his fugitive companions and praised their bravery.
When did this event happen and how old were our heroes then?
It’s known from N. Sheykhzamanli's memoirs that Zeynalabdin's wedding took place in 1904. We determined via the help of camera images that Zeynalabdin was 22 years old, Deli Ali was 45 years old and Ashug Alasgar was 52 years old at that time.
