LONGING FOR HOMELAND IN LITERARY ACTIVITIES OF AZERBAIJANI MOUNTAIN JEWS
Ayna ALIKHANOVA

For centuries, the mountain Jews live mainly in the Guba region of Azerbaijan,
partly in Goychay, Sheki, Oguz, Gabala, as well as in the village of Balakhani in
Baku and Tolstoy Street in the capital. Though they have mastered the language and
national culture of their country, they have preserved the shared language coming
from ancient Hebrew, their traditions based on their religions for generations and are
not forgotten. This is evident in the literature of the mountain Jews of the early
twentieth century. Mountain Jews, regardless of where they live, consider this
country as their true homeland, despite the inviolability of the position of “Great
Motherland and Citizen” in their hearts. Therefore, during our research, we were
obliged to proudly speak about the contributions of the writers of the mountain Jews,
as well as the representatives of this nation as a whole, to the science, culture and art
of Azerbaijan.
