This article describes the life and creativity of the Turkish poet Ali Ruhi in the
context of Azerbaijani-Turkish literary relations and his ghazal which was published
in the 16th issue of the “Gunesh” – (“The Sun”) newspaper on September 10, 1910.
Ali Ruhi is one of the lesser-known figures in Turkish literature. His name is mainly
remembered with the" “Ertugrul” frigate on September 16, 1890, which crashed into
the rocks and sank near the Japanese island of Oshima. The tragedy of the “Ertugrul”
frigate is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the Turkish navy and is
considered one of the most important, even the first, historical events in the
development of Turkish-Japanese relations. Numerous works have been written
about the tragedy in both Japanese and Turkish literature, lamentations have been
made, research has been conducted, and films have been made. A year after the
tragedy, a monument was erected on the island of Oshima in memory of the martyrs,
and over time, a Turkish martyrdom was established here. The victims of the tragedy
are commemorated every year in both Turkey and Japan with various events. The
publication of Ali Ruhi's (who was from the ship's crew) ghazal in Baku on the 20th
anniversary of the incident shows that this tragedy is remembered in Azerbaijan as
well and that the incident is remembered by our people in one way or another.
