The article studies the commentary methodology (sharh) of the great Azerbaijani linguist, scholar, literary critic of the 11th century Khatib Tabrizi on the famous monument of early Arabian poetry – the poem “Imru al-Qais”, known as “Muallakaof Imru al-Qais”, furthermore, the sources and the commentary methodology he used are studied as well. The methodology of comments of Muallaka Khatib Tabrizi can be described as a simple way of teaching. Despite the fact that Khatib Tabrizi commonly referred to the writings of his predecessors, at the same time, he voiced his opinion and excluded from them thoughts with which he did not agree. He also applied a number of innovations in his comments, in particular, he noted the used meters of aruz in muallakas ofImru al-Qais and Labid. The topics and issues that were studied by Khatib Tabrizi in his comments on Muallka, in particular, on Muallaka of Imru al-Qais, which is the main topic of this article, are grouped as follows: questions of linguistics, questions of poetics and aruz, worldview, folklore, topics related to historical events and the Koran. In his references to sources and explaining linguistic questions, KhatibTabrizi did not speak from the position of only one grammar school, but, on the contrary, inherited relevant ideas from representatives of different grammar schools. The commentator limited himself to a brief description of poetic styles (tashbeh, istiaramajaz, etc.) or a simple reference to those that occur in muallaka and does not list them and does not explain the connection between the parties. In this article, all these questions are based on examples and conclusions. Tabrizi’s comments, due to their simplicity, clarity of presentation, brevity, and other above-mentioned characteristics, became among the most famous among other works on the study of the poetry of the Jahili period.
