Habsiyya (Prison poetry) is one of the ancient genres of Oriental literature. The outstanding representatives of this genre in Azerbaijani literature were Khagani, Falaki, in Persian literature – Masud Saad Salman, Nasir Khosrov and in Arabic literature – Abu Firas al-Hamdani. One of the valuable examples of Arabic literature is the habsiyyat “Al-Rumiyyat” which was written by Arabic poet Abu Firas al-Hamdani when he was imprisoned in Byzantium and lived in the palace of Sayf al-Dawla. In “Al-Rumiyyat” the poet described the humour with great mastership.
